The AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language is pleased to offer two scholarships for professionals seeking certification as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS®). The Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT® Scholarship and the AG Bell AVEd Scholarship each financially support recipients during their final year of the certification process as they work to fulfill requirements, such as covering mentoring and continuing education costs, as well as includes the cost of the certification exam.
Doreen Pollak LSLS Cert. AVT Scholarship: The AG Bell Academy has partnered with the Listen Foundation to establish a professional scholarship in the name of Doreen Pollack, a pioneer in the standards of excellence in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL). The purpose of this scholarship is to assist professionals in fulfilling the requirements for certification as a LSLS in Auditory-Verbal Therapy (LSLS Cert. AVT).
Congratulations to M. Elizabeth Tippette and Brittany L. Spier on being the 2021 recipients of this award!
Elizabeth Tippette, MSP, CCC-SLP, works as a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP) at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist medical center in North Carolina. Tippette is seeking certification as a LSLS Cert. AVT so she can be at her best as a therapist, academic, and parent coach. “I knew that the only way to achieve the absolute highest competencies and training was to complete the LSLS certification,” she said.
How will the scholarship help you in the certification process?
“I see this world as being all about accessibility. Funds supply access to knowledge, and knowledge provides access to success. This incredible donation to my education and training has enabled me to purchase books, a professional membership in AG Bell, registration for attendance to the AG Bell Global LSL Symposium, and a shot at the certification practice exam. I am gratefully honored to have received this scholarship!”
What do you see as the future for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using LSL?
“For me as merely a seedling in this profession, I see my aspirations tightly bound up in three areas: 1) ensuring babies access hearing aids and, when needed, cochlear implants without delay; 2) studying and enacting change within the intersection of racial and economic inequities where families and children face barriers to access social, educational, and health systems; and 3) improving access to mental health and social work services across the lifespan for all people (caregivers, children, AND professionals) living and working within the community of the deaf and hard of hearing.”
Brittany L Spier, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a SLP at an outpatient pediatric facility in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she works closely with families, care providers, and educators. Her interest in certification came immediately after learning about the great need the state of Louisiana has for skilled LSL providers. Spiers is seeking certification in order to bridge the gap between pediatric therapists and the unique needs of children with hearing loss. “I have been able to share my growing knowledge with not only my patients and their families but also with my colleagues,” she added.
How will the scholarship help you in the certification process?
“I am nearing the end of my five-year training process and am beginning to study for the exam. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my examination prep and alleviate the financial burden of my remaining mentored sessions. Additionally, the scholarship will give me the opportunity to sit for the exam as soon as I complete my direct patient hours.”
What do you see as the future for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using LSL?
“I take great pride in the work that I do in being able to help patients and families navigate the difficulties that come with speech and language disorders. Working closely with families, care providers, and educators, I want to be an advocate for my patients to help them receive the services they need and will benefit from the most.”
AG Bell AVEd Scholarship: Through the generous support of legacy donors, AG Bell has established a professional scholarship to support the certification of educators through the AG Bell Academy. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist professionals in fulfilling the requirements for certification as a LSLS in Auditory-Verbal Education (LSLS Cert. AVEd®).
Congratulations to Meaghan Boyle and Esther Armendariz on being the 2021 recipients of this award!
Meaghan Boyle, M.Ed., is a preschool itinerant teacher in the Saskatoon public school system in Saskatchewan, Canada. After beginning work in a special education preschool within the public school system, Boyle received a grant to attend an AG Bell Convention where she learned about the AG Bell Academy. “I was so inspired, I wanted to learn more. And knowing there is no one in Saskatchewan certified, I can work towards building more community support for LSL as an option,” she said.
How will the scholarship help you in the certification process?
“I can work more with my mentor and set up more sessions. Because I am a teacher and I move around the classroom, it takes a lot of time and effort to edit my videos for review so we meet more frequently to review the different areas I am able to capture. I also will use this scholarship for additional professional development opportunities, which are more available online now and don’t require travel.”
What do you see as the future for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using LSL?
“Just endless opportunity. For example, I had a little guy in my class last year who is going into kindergarten this year and he is on track to be ahead of many of his classmates in terms of his language and pre-academic skills. We live in a hearing and speaking world. And with early diagnosis and early intervention, these kids can have the same opportunities as their peers with typical hearing.”
Esther Armendariz, M.Ed., is an itinerant teacher in El Paso, Texas. Armendariz is seeking certification to refine her skills and to be a resource for families and students in her caseload. “I’ve participated in professional development opportunities facilitated by LSL Specialists and was impressed by the depth of knowledge and real-life application they offered to their families and listeners,” Armendariz stated.
How will the scholarship help you in the certification process?
“The scholarship will assist me in paying the fees for the test and the purchase of resources that will support my knowledge of how to apply research-based strategies with children with hearing loss.”
What do you see as the future for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using LSL?
“I want to continue working in my community and providing a strong foundation in their listening and spoken language journey.”

¿Como considera el futuro de los niños con sordera e hipoacusia que emplean el LSL?
«Como una simple aprendiz en esta profesión, considero que mis aspiraciones están estrechamente ligadas a tres áreas: 1) garantizar que los bebés tengan acceso a los audífonos y, cuando sea necesario, a los implantes cocleares sin demora; 2) estudiar y promover cambios en la intersección de las desigualdades raciales y económicas que representan barreras a las que se enfrentan las familias y los niños para acceder a los sistemas sociales, educativos y sanitarios; y 3) mejorar el acceso a los servicios de salud mental y trabajo social a lo largo de la vida de todas las personas (cuidadores, niños Y profesionales) que viven y trabajan en la comunidad de personas con sordera e hipoacusia».
Brittany L. Spier, M.S., CCC-SLP, es logopeda en un centro pediátrico ambulatorio de Baton Rouge, Luisiana, donde trabaja en estrecha colaboración con familias, profesionales sanitarios y educadores. Se sintió interesada por la certificación tras enterarse de la gran necesidad que tiene el estado de Luisiana de proveedores de LSL capacitados. La Sra. Spire desea obtener la certificación para salvar la brecha entre los terapeutas pediátricos y las necesidades específicas de los niños con pérdida auditiva. «He podido compartir mis crecientes conocimientos, no solo con mis pacientes y sus familias, sino también con mis colegas», afirmó.
¿Cómo le ayudará la beca en el proceso de certificación?
«Me estoy acercando al final de mi proceso de formación de cinco años y estoy empezando a estudiar para el examen. Esta beca me permitirá centrarme en su preparación y aliviar la carga económica de las sesiones de tutoría que me quedan. Además, la beca me facilitará la oportunidad de presentarme al examen tan pronto como complete mis horas con pacientes directos».
¿Como considera el futuro de los niños con sordera e hipoacusia que emplean el LSL?
«Me siento orgullosa del trabajo que realizo para ayudar a los pacientes y a sus familias a superar las dificultades que acompañan a los trastornos del habla y el lenguaje. Trabajando en estrecha colaboración con las familias, los profesionales sanitarios y los educadores, me gustaría defender los derechos de mis pacientes para que puedan recibir los servicios que necesiten y los que más les beneficien».

Meaghan Boyle, M.Ed., es maestra itinerante de preescolar en el sistema de escuelas públicas Saskatoon, en Saskatchewan, Canadá. Después de comenzar a trabajar en un centro preescolar de educación especial del sistema de escuelas públicas, la Sra. Boyle recibió una subvención para asistir a una Convención de AG Bell donde tuvo la oportunidad de conocer la AG Bell Academy. «Fue una gran inspiración y me entraron ganas de aprender más. Siendo consciente de que no existe ningún profesional certificado en Saskatchewan, puedo trabajar para conseguir un mayor apoyo comunitario para LSL como una opción», explicó.
¿Cómo le ayudará la beca en el proceso de certificación?
«Puedo trabajar más con mi tutor y programar más sesiones. Dado que soy maestra y me desplazo por el aula, se necesita mucho tiempo y esfuerzo para editar mis videos y revisarlos, por lo que nos reunimos con más frecuencia para revisar las diferentes áreas en las que me puedo centrar. También emplearé esta beca para acceder a otras oportunidades de desarrollo profesional, que se encuentran actualmente más disponibles en línea y no requieren desplazarse».
¿Como considera el futuro de los niños con sordera e hipoacusia que emplean el LSL?
«Una oportunidad sin fin. Por ejemplo, en mi clase del año pasado había un niño que entrará en preescolar este año y que posiblemente adelante a muchos de sus compañeros de clase en términos de lenguaje y habilidades preacadémicas. Vivimos en un mundo de audición y lenguaje hablado. Con un diagnóstico y una intervención tempranos, estos niños pueden tener las mismas oportunidades que sus compañeros con una audición normal».
Esther Armendariz, M.Ed., es maestra itinerante en El Paso, Texas. La Sra. Armendariz desea obtener la certificación para perfeccionar sus habilidades y ser un recurso para las familias y los alumnos a los que atiende. «He participado en oportunidades de desarrollo profesional facilitadas por especialistas de LSL y me impresionó la profundidad del conocimiento y la aplicación en la vida real que ofrecían a los alumnos y a sus familias», afirmó.
¿Cómo le ayudará la beca en el proceso de certificación?
«La beca me ayudará a abonar el costo del examen y adquirir recursos que respalden mis conocimientos de cómo aplicar estrategias basadas en la investigación en niños con pérdida auditiva».
¿Como considera el futuro de los niños con sordera e hipoacusia que emplean el LSL?
«Quiero seguir trabajando en mi comunidad y facilitar una base sólida en su itinerario de escucha y lenguaje hablado».
