This summer, AG Bell welcomed 12 interns to its virtual office to help out in a number of capacities. Interns are a critical part of the AG Bell staff and bring a wide breadth of knowledge and skills to the organization. In return, AG Bell provides them with the opportunity to build their skills, an inside look at how nonprofits work and an experience that is unparalleled anywhere else. But best of all, many interns have had no experience with hearing loss and find their time with AG Bell particularly enlightening. Here are reflections of some of our interns and their summer with us.
Name: Griffin Lallier
Hometown: Williamstown, New Jersey
School/school year: Senior, Rowan University
Major: International studies, minor in political science and geography studies
I worked with the development team on creating new fundraising ideas and events.
Coming into this internship, I only knew small things about the community of people who are deaf and hard of hearing. This organization has really opened my eyes on all the different routes one can take in terms of development and speech. I also got the chance to meet people who really have a passion for working with this community. That dedication comes in handy for speech pathologists and other professionals who must train and work for their certifications. I have also learned how teamwork can have long lasting effects on people’s experiences and lives.

School/school year: Senior, Bucknell University
Major: Economics, minor in history
During my internship at AG Bell, I worked as a member of the development team where I researched and proposed methods to implement a junior auxiliary board for the future.
This internship has taught me lots about how nonprofits operate internally and communicate with their donors. I was surprised at how closely the various roles within the organization work together, from communication to development to upper management.

Major: Public policy leadership and political science
I helped manage the Instagram page, wrote for The Afternoon Bell, and participated in a monthly giving campaign design competition with my intern team.
Working for AG Bell, I learned a lot about its mission as well as all the moving parts that must come together for that mission to be achieved. I come from a governmental policy perspective and it was eye-opening to see all the hands-on work that comes with maintaining and operating a non-profit organization that does as much good for the community as AG Bell. Learning that such organizations work so closely with the individuals they assist while training and providing curriculum for professionals in the adjacent fields showed me how integral these organizations are to the success of our nation. Without groups such as AG Bell, thousands of people, especially children, across this country wouldn’t have the access and support to overcome hearing impairment and make strides for their future. More than the work they do for individuals, AG Bell is also destigmatizing the communities of people who are deaf and hard of hearing and providing opportunities for unfettered future success in all communities.

The greatest thing I have learned from working at AG Bell is that working with a team toward a common goal can change countless lives for the better. I was surprised by the passion, dedication, and compassion every single member of the AG Bell staff has for the people that they work to help. Most companies or nonprofits don’t have that shared love of what they do, and that was so impactful and inspiring to me. I am honored to have been a small part of the great work that AG Bell is doing, and I hope to one day make an impact as important as the one this group is making.
Name: Catherine Shrubshall

School/ school year: 3rd year, University of Edinburgh
Major: Medical Sciences
During my time at AG Bell, I mostly focused on creating a student version of the existing Chapters format and putting out surveys. I learned a lot about how to create a program within a charitable organization that can support its target audience while maintaining the parameters set by the funding and the volunteers available. Additionally, I learned a lot about advocacy work and public policy, and how to create real change in legislation. However, I think what had the biggest impact on me was getting to interact with professionals and leaders within AG Bell who have been immersed in the community of people who are oral and deaf and hard of hearing. As someone who is profoundly deaf and uses a cochlear implant, it has been really cool to see how AG Bell has such a positive impact on people like me.

I worked as a special support intern working with our Chief Strategy Officer and Programs coordinator.
I came into this internship ready for just about anything. I had expected to do more paper pushing and more admin-like work, but when I started, I was pleasantly surprised about how much the staff educated the other interns and me about the important work that AG Bell does around the world. Since I worked more on the programs side of AG Bell, I learned a lot about finding passion in the work you do. This was emphasized for me seeing Gayla and Julie and how willing they were to explain what they do! After the work I have done this summer, I have learned to give everything my best effort and to find what I am passionate about.

At AG Bell, I was an assistant for Trenita where I helped with membership and other database projects.
The experience and knowledge that I have obtained through my internship at AG Bell has been invaluable. This summer, I have learned many new skills that will help me in any and all my future endeavors, wherever they may be. However, something that I learned this summer that surprised me was all the behind the scenes work of nonprofits. When you look at nonprofits, you only really see the polished parts that are presented to the public. However, to be able to get an insider look at all the work that is put into helping people and running an organization has been eye-opening. I cannot wait to take the experience and knowledge that I gained back home to my local community. Thank you, AG Bell!

Prácticas de verano en AG Bell

Lo más importante que he aprendido de mi estancia en AG Bell es que trabajar con un equipo hacia un objetivo común puede mejorar la vida de muchísimas personas. Me sorprendió el entusiasmo, la dedicación y la empatía que todos los miembros del personal de AG Bell muestran por las personas a las que ayudan con su trabajo. En la mayoría de las empresas o las organizaciones sin fines de lucro no se observa ese apego compartido por lo que hacen y que me resultó tan impactante e inspirador. Me siento honrada de haber formado una pequeña parte del gran trabajo que AG Bell realiza y espero que, algún día, el impacto de mi trabajo sea tan importante como el de esta organización.

Durante mi instancia en AG Bell, me centré principalmente en crear una versión para estudiantes del formato de Secciones existente y en realizar encuestas. He aprendido mucho acerca de la manera de crear un programa dentro de una organización benéfica que pueda apoyar a su público objetivo mientras mantiene los parámetros establecidos de financiación y voluntariado disponibles. Además, he aprendido mucho sobre el trabajo de defensa/reivindicación y las políticas públicas, y cómo generar un cambio real en la legislación. Como me dediqué más a la parte de los programas de AG Bell, aprendí mucho sobre mostrar entusiasmo por el trabajo que hagas. ¡Pude apreciarlo en la gran disposición de Gayla y Julie a explicarme lo que hacían! Después del trabajo realizado este verano, he aprendido a poner todo mi empeño en una tarea y a encontrar algo que me entusiasme.
