The 2022 AG Bell Global Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Virtual Symposium will focus on excelling in a transformed world. As we emerge from the global pandemic, learning to thrive in new and different ways remains critical. This year’s Virtual Symposium will give attendees a global perspective on current and emerging best practices as well as provide collaborative opportunities to meet, network, and learn with colleagues.

“At a time when people are reconfiguring their lives to engage in what means the most to them, many people around the world are eager to learn more about LSL and related positive outcomes” said Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell). “We surpassed our projections of attendance again at last year’s symposium and recognize that virtual programming allows many more people to participate and learn about LSL. Bringing nearly 1,000 people together from 50 countries to the AG Bell Symposium is indicative of a keen interest in LSL and we hope to draw even more individuals this year so that the impact of LSL can be expanded further across the globe.”

The Symposium will take place live, June 29 and 30, and on-demand, July 20-August 31. Both versions are available for one registration fee, fully online, offer continuing education units (CEUs), and integrate English and Spanish with oral translation and written captions, giving AG Bell more ability to reach out to professionals eager to learn best practices around LSL regardless of where they live.

Same Great Learning Opportunities

Participants of the Symposium can expect world-class learning opportunities from leaders in the field of LSL. In addition to four exceptional keynote presenters whose research and presentations are NIH-funded, this year’s program adds an exciting, closing presentation. The bonus session features a panel discussion on the role of community in building and encouraging parent relationships with their child.

“We are thrilled to offer an exciting, relevant, and enriching program with inspiring presenters who teach and lead with dedication to enhancing the lives of children and families. The professionals who attend the AG Bell Symposium want to hear and learn from others who are both passionate about LSL and related areas. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing have so much potential! Helping children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to listen and talk and supporting their families to achieve strong LSL outcomes is what we hope to extend to every professional” said Gayla Guignard, AG Bell’s Chief Strategy Office. “The Symposium core committee has worked hard to identify content that will lead to a whole slate of new ideas and tools professionals can use in their own practice. I think that attendees should expect to leave the symposium as a more prepared, engaged, and enlightened professional.”

The Symposium will also offer concurrent sessions, three hearing innovation forums, and poster + 5-minute podium presentations. Similar to previous years, three simultaneous concurrent sessions per one- to 1.5-hour time slot will be offered throughout the two days of programming. “The education program for this year’s Symposium will inspire both new and experienced practitioners. Our community is always developing, and it’s now a world-wide professional network,” said Elizabeth Tyszkiewicz, one of the Symposium Education Advisory Committee co-chairs. “Any group of listening and spoken language professionals will have a story about the time that they heard a presentation or a talk that inspired them. The real shock is when you discover that you stood up and talked about something, and then you became that story for somebody else. That’s how this conference works. It’s a place where the experienced can renew their knowledge with the research on cutting-edge practice with, but also, it’s a place where people who are just starting out can come to be inspired.”

New for this year are immersive sessions. Real-world experiences, scenarios and tools will be shared that attendees can apply immediately to make changes and improvements in their own practice. “For many years, AG Bell conventions have been a place where professionals to come and get ideas about what is working for other people in other circumstances. To spark and inspire us to try something new in our classrooms and our therapy. This is our attempt to recreate that in a virtual environment,” said Teri Ouellette, one of the Symposium Education Advisory Committee co-chairs. “I think it’s going to be really exciting, and I’m really looking forward to it!”

One Registration Fee, Two Opportunities to Learn

Back again this year is the on-demand Symposium event. The live sessions on June 29 and 30 will be recorded, so even if you are unable to attend the live event or want to attend two sessions that are offered at the same time, it’s likely that you’ll have access to the other session at a later date when the on-demand sessions are available over the summer, July 20-August 31. For one registration fee, you may choose to join the live Symposium June 29 and 30 and interact with colleagues, or view later when your time allows. Whether you want to attend the live Symposium, the on-demand Symposium sessions, or a combination of both, one registration is all that is needed. Continuing education credit is available for both the live Symposium and on-demand content with up to 41.5 (4.15) CEUs available from the AG Bell Academy, ASHA, and AAA.

Hear from and participate with colleagues on your own schedule. Join the live Symposium sessions, view recorded sessions, or do a mix of live and recorded sessions to earn your CEUs and be with others who are interested in listening and spoken language. Choosing a mix of live and recorded sessions will be easy through an online learning platform, and all sessions will be available in English and Spanish. Other languages may be made available upon request to [email protected] by June 10, 2022.
