In Memoriam: Phyllis Feibelman and Seung Ha OH

Phyllis Brown Feibelman

Phyllis Brown Feibelman was a long-time parent advocate and active member of AG Bell. She passed away on July 20, 2023, at the age of 88.

She lived her life to the fullest in Mobile, Ala. She earned several degrees including a Master’s degree in education, which she used in her work as a community advocate. She worked selflessly, serving on the leadership of several local and national organization boards, including the AG Bell board as a parent member; past President of the Springhill Avenue Temple; past president of the Mobile Section of the National Council of Jewish Women; and as chair of the Mobile County Department of Human Resources’ Board of Directors.

She also served as a member on many education boards, such as the Mobile Public Library, the Girl Scouts of the Deep South Council, the International Parent Section of AG Bell, the McGill-Toolen PTA, the Mobile Health Association, L’Arche Mobile, the Contact Mobile/ Deaf Contact, and Parents as First Teachers.

Her love of “little people”, the affectionate name she used for children, and her own son who was deaf contributed to her (and her husband’s) involvement in founding the Mobile Preschool for the Sensory Impaired. Every year for 34 years, Phyllis hosted an Easter egg hunt for the school and its friends.

Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband of 24 years, Herbert P. Feibelman, Jr., and her son, Herbert P. Feibelman III.

She is survived by her other two sons, Samuel F. Feibelman (Claris Lynn), Phillip L. Feibelman (Robin), and her beloved grandchildren: Claris Leigh Perkins (Woodie), Emily Kate Deptola (Doug), Samuel Feibelman, Jr (Liz), and Jennifer Lyn Feibelman. She has two great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her brother Milton Brown (Margaret) and sister Lynn Brown Robinson, along with nieces and nephews.

Professor Seung Ha OH

On 2023 November 26, the world of otology, neuro-otology, and hearing rehabilitation lost one of its most influential and productive otologists, scientists, and teachers as well as the leader of the Korean Otological Society. Professor Seung Ha OH passed away at the age of 63.

Professor Seung Ha OH was born on Aug 15, 1960, and grew up in Seoul. After graduating from Seoul National University and completing his residency at Seoul National University Hospital, he began his career as a professor at Seoul National University in 1998.

Seung Ha built a national and international reputation and was a frequent contributor to academic meetings around the world. He published approximately 250 peer-reviewed articles and was passionate about cochlear implants and otologic surgery. His leadership and friendship enabled him to host the recent 14th Asian Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implants and Related Services with great success.

Seung Ha had a deep understanding of why and how auditory-verbal therapy is needed and important for children with hearing loss and their families. He had not only understood but also contributed to family and professional education of auditory-verbal therapy for many years. When he held the first family education program at Seoul National University Hospital, more than 200 parents came from all over the country. He overtimed the program with a series of questions and answers and tears from the family.

He was a gifted surgeon and professor. On top of that, he was a heartfelt friend of the children with hearing loss and their families. We will miss him dearly.
Seung Ha was survived by a loving wife (Moon ja Lee, [email protected]), a son (Sang Whan), and a daughter (Ji Young).
