On June 28 and 29, an international community of people from 46 countries participated in the AG Bell Global Listening and Spoken Language Virtual Symposium.

For the fourth year in a row, attendees came together in a virtual learning environment to hear from leaders in the field of listening and spoken language (LSL) and improve their own knowledge about best practices.
“We continue to expand listening and spoken language globally, and the Symposium is a reflection of those efforts” said Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell). “The number of countries represented continues to rise every year, and these professionals are eager to gain as much knowledge as they can to trailblaze the growth of listening and spoken language opportunities for children in their countries. We are excited that new areas of the world continue to be reached every year.”
Learning from Global Leaders
The biggest draw to this year’s Symposium remained the education program, variety of presentation styles and topics, and the reputations of the presenters themselves. From NIH-funded keynote presentations to lunch-time conversations, there was a little bit of everything for attendees to enjoy.
“I am grateful for how the speakers have presented the workshops and keynote talks all with research foundations that support the work of LSL,” said one attendee through an evaluation survey. “It has motivated me and allowed me to fall in love with the work that I do with my children and parents.”
Another attendee noted, “I think there was a nice variety of topics and I always look forward to the updates…I love the deep dive into research every year.”
In addition, attendees also praised the presenters themselves. “I enjoyed learning from presenters who are highly regarded in their field as well as those who are passionate,” said one attendee.
Another also specifically commended the speakers: “Presenters do a phenomenal job of connecting research to application.”
Amplifying Knowledge of LSL Best Practices
The Symposium is unique because many attendees tell us how easy it was to take away practical tips and ideas. As one attendee noted, “The sessions provided ideas that I can bring with me immediately to my practice, plus they provided real world examples. I also liked the conversations sessions and discussions.”
Another attendee was just as enthusiastic about what she learned: “I have many new tips and tricks to use in upcoming therapy sessions regarding mainstreaming, self-advocacy, parent coaching, Deaf and patients, and cultural differences.”
The value of this practical knowledge is especially important to those who live in places where access to learning about LSL is extremely limited. “Watching the community grow to world-wide status, due to the accessibility of virtual learning, has been incredible,” said one attendee.
Connecting with Colleagues from Around the World
This year’s Symposium continued to try different collaborative opportunities for attendees to meet, network, and learn with colleagues. “I loved the welcoming and positive environment created by all who attended and presented,” commented one attendee.
New for this year were Conversation sessions that were a lunch-and-learn opportunity to discuss topics specific to unique to professionals, parents/caregivers, and students. To allow for more interaction, the Conversations sessions allowed attendees to discuss and engage with each other in a Zoom room rather than the online learning platform.
“I appreciated the effort to make it more interactive with the addition of the Conversations,” exclaimed one attendee.
We offered captioning of all sessions in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Japanese, Arabic, and Danish. The ability to communicate presentations in multiple languages increased opportunities for people all over the world to learn more about listening and spoken language development and best practices. As one attendee noted, “How lucky we are to have a virtual Symposium that can reach so may diverse individuals who have one shared goal.”
Symposium Sessions Will Be Available On Demand
One of the main benefits of a virtual program is the ability to record and offer the sessions to all attendees. “I am so grateful that, post-pandemic, you continue to offer live and on demand learning opportunities. I am very much looking forward to learning more when the on demand sessions become available,” commented one attendee.
Regardless of where you are in the world, you will still have an opportunity to learn about best practices in the field of LSL, information that can easily be applied directly to practice. And you can do this on your own schedule, in the comfort of your home.
AG Bell plans to offer an On Demand version of the Symposium from July 25- September 15. The recorded sessions will be available to view through the Symposium’s online learning platform, and registrants can earn up to 52 continuing education credits (CEUs) for the AG Bell Academy, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and the American Academy of Audiology (AAA). Those who registered for and/or attended the live Symposium will also have access to the on demand sessions at no additional cost. However, anyone can still register and participate in the on demand version of the Symposium at www.agbellsymposium.com.
Where To Next?
While feedback for the virtual format has been largely positive, many professionals are ready to get back to in-person learning. As we look to the future, we need your feedback to plan future symposia that will meet the needs of all professionals from around the world.

Aprender, ampliar conocimientos y conectarse con profesionales de LSLS de todo el mundo

Los días 28 y 29 de junio, una comunidad internacional de personas procedentes de 46 países participó en el Simposio Global Virtual de AG Bell de Escucha y Lenguaje Hablado. Por cuarto año consecutivo, los asistentes se reunieron en un entorno de aprendizaje virtual para aprender de la mano de los líderes en el campo de la escucha y el lenguaje hablado (LSL), y mejorar sus conocimientos sobre las mejores prácticas.
«Seguimos expandiendo la escucha y el lenguaje hablado en todo el mundo y el Simposio es un reflejo de este esfuerzo», asegura Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell). «El número de países representados sigue aumentando cada año y estos profesionales se muestran deseosos de adquirir tantos conocimientos como puedan para abrir camino al crecimiento de las oportunidades de escucha y de lenguaje hablado para los niños de su país. Nos enorgullece seguir llegando cada año a nuevas áreas del mundo».
Aprender de la mano de los líderes mundiales
El mayor atractivo del Simposio de este año ha seguido siendo el programa educativo, la variedad de estilos y temas de presentación, y la reputación de los propios ponentes. Desde presentaciones magistrales financiadas por los NIH hasta conversaciones a la hora del almuerzo, hubo un poco de todo para que los asistentes disfrutaran.
«Siento agradecimiento por la forma en que los ponentes han presentado los talleres y las conferencias magistrales, todos ellos fundamentados en la investigación que respalda el trabajo de LSL», afirmó uno de los asistentes en una encuesta de evaluación. «Me ha motivado y me ha servido para valorar aún más el trabajo que realizo con los niños y sus padres».
Otro asistente señaló: «Creo que ha habido una buena variedad de temas y siempre espero con impaciencia las novedades… Me encanta la inmersión profunda en la investigación que se realiza todos los años».
Además, los asistentes también elogiaron a los propios ponentes. «Me ha encantado aprender de la mano de ponentes tan respetados en su ámbito, y también su entusiasmo», aseguró un asistente.
Otro asistente también elogió específicamente a los ponentes: «Los ponentes realizan un trabajo fantástico para conectar la investigación con la aplicación».
Ampliar los conocimientos de las mejores prácticas de LSL
El Simposio es único porque muchos asistentes nos transmiten lo fácil que les resulta adquirir consejos e ideas prácticas. Como señaló uno de los asistentes: «Las sesiones me han aportado ideas que puedo aplicar inmediatamente a mi práctica, además de ejemplos del mundo real. También me gustaron las sesiones de conversación y los debates».
Otra asistente se mostraba igual de entusiasmada con lo que había aprendido: «He adquirido un gran número de consejos y trucos nuevos que utilizaré en las próximas sesiones de terapia con respecto a la integración en el sistema educativo ordinario, la defensa de los propios intereses, el entrenamientos/coaching de los padres, así como de los pacientes con sordera, y las diferencias culturales».
El valor de estos conocimientos prácticos es especialmente importante para las personas que residen en lugares donde el acceso al aprendizaje de LSL es extremadamente limitado. «Ha sido increíble comprobar cómo la comunidad se ha extendido por todo el mundo gracias a la accesibilidad del aprendizaje virtual», apuntó uno de los asistentes.
Conectarse con colegas de todo el mundo
En el Simposio de este año también se han ofrecido nuevas y diferentes oportunidades de colaboración para que los asistentes se reúnan, establezcan contactos y aprendan con sus colegas. «Me ha encantado el ambiente acogedor y positivo creado por todos los que asistieron y realizaron presentaciones», comentó otro de los asistentes.
La novedad de este año fueron las sesiones de conversación, con un formato de «almuerzo y aprendizaje», en las que se debatieron temas específicos para profesionales, padres/cuidadores y estudiantes. Para permitir una mayor interacción, en las sesiones de Conversaciones los asistentes pudieron debatir e interactuar entre sí en una sala Zoom, en lugar de en la plataforma de aprendizaje en línea.
«Agradecí el esfuerzo de que el simposio fuera más interactivo con la incorporación de las Conversaciones», exclamó un asistente.
Se ofrecieron subtítulos de todas las sesiones en varios idiomas: inglés, español, portugués, indonesio, japonés, árabe y danés. La capacidad de trasmitir presentaciones en varios idiomas incrementó las oportunidades de que personas de todo el mundo conocieran mejor el desarrollo de la escucha y el lenguaje hablado, así como las mejores prácticas. Como señaló uno de los asistentes: «Qué afortunados somos de tener un Simposio virtual que puede llegar a tantas personas diversas que tienen un objetivo común».
Las sesiones del Simposio estarán disponibles bajo demanda
Una de las principales ventajas de un programa virtual es la posibilidad de grabar y ofrecer las sesiones a todos los asistentes. «Aprecio enormemente que, tras la pandemia, sigan ofreciendo oportunidades de aprendizaje en vivo y bajo demanda. Estoy deseando adquirir más conocimientos cuando se encuentren disponibles las sesiones bajo demanda», comentó uno de los asistentes.
Independientemente del lugar del mundo donde resida, seguirá teniendo la oportunidad de aprender las mejores prácticas en el campo de LSL, una información que se puede aplicar fácil y directamente a la práctica. Y lo podrá hacer en su propio horario, desde la comodidad de su hogar.
AG Bell tiene previsto ofrecer una versión bajo demanda del Simposio del 25 de julio al 15 de septiembre. Las sesiones grabadas estarán disponibles a través de la plataforma de aprendizaje en línea del Simposio y las personas inscritas podrán obtener hasta 52 créditos de unidades de educación continua (CEU) de la AG Bell Academy, la American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) y la American Academy of Audiology (AAA). Las personas que se hayan inscrito y/o hayan asistido al Simposio en vivo tendrán también acceso a las sesiones bajo demanda sin ningún costo adicional. No obstante, cualquier persona se puede inscribir y participar en la versión bajo demanda del Simposio en www.agbellsymposium.com.
Próximos pasos
Si bien las opiniones sobre el formato virtual han sido mayoritariamente positivas, numerosos profesionales muestran su interés por recuperar el aprendizaje presencial. De cara al futuro, necesitamos que nos hagan llegar sus opiniones para planificar futuros simposios que satisfagan las necesidades de todos los profesionales a nivel mundial.
