Trudy Smith, Lilian Flores-Beltran, and Teri Ouellette took a few moments to give us some insight into the planning process and what they’re looking forward to creating in 2023.

Planning is well underway for the 2023 AG Bell Global LSL Virtual Symposium. This year’s co-chairs of the education advisory panel provide a great depth of experience and knowledge that they will use to create a compelling education program for professionals in every stage of their career, all over the world.
Trudy Smith, Lilian Flores-Beltran, and Teri Ouellette took a few moments to give us some insight into the planning process and what they’re looking forward to creating in 2023.
Why did you agree to participate as co-chair of this year’s Education Advisory Panel?
Trudy Smith: I was a member of the Education Advisory Panel for the 2021 Symposium, which gave me a privileged glimpse into the process. I was honoured to be invited to be a co-chair this year! I hope to represent perspectives, attitudes, and knowledge from the global south to this committee.
Lilian Flores-Beltran: I believe that any professional who is part of the hearing and language area would agree to be co-chair of the advisory panel for the 2023 Symposium, since it is a challenge and an honor to collaborate and be able to leave part of my vision in such an international and important project.
Teri Ouellette: I found the experience of serving on the 2022 panel both exciting and personally enriching. Working together with colleagues from around the globe brought me new perspectives. I was honored to be asked to serve in the role of “past co-chair” to bridge my experience last year to the 2023 panel.
What experience and knowledge do you bring do the planning process?
Teri: As the “past co-chair” I hope to bring the history of what has been considered and found to be helpful. As a member of AG Bell since the 1980s and a past president of the Academy Board, my history as a participant is broad, but I look forward to fresh ideas from the new panel members and I am certain we will combine our perspectives to present another amazing Symposium.
Trudy: I have been managing professional learning events for over 10 years and attending AG Bell-run events for 15 years. I have also been a LSLS mentor for 10 years and teach in the NextSense/ Macquarie University Teacher of the Deaf Masters program. I am looking forward to combining my professional knowledge and collegial networks (who are also personal friends!) to the 2023 planning process.
Lilian: Over the past 22 years I have created lots of courses for professionals in almost all Latin American countries and in Spanish and Portuguese, as well as understanding the different ways of thinking in their culture. Latin America is not only a large region, but a series of many countries in which each one has a great cultural heritage. There are those who think that because millions of people speak the same language, we are equal. This could not be farther from the truth. Each country is very particular, and I will use this knowledge to help increase the number of attendees from Latin America to the Symposium.
The Symposium is going into its third year as a virtual event. Why do you think people continue to attend this event every year?
Lilian: Obviously, we owe this change to the pandemic, but I believe that without imagining it, offering a virtual Symposium has been extremely positive. We have had the opportunity to increase the number of professionals and students attending from many parts of the world, giving them the opportunity to participate in something that otherwise would have been impossible.
Trudy: The Symposium provides an opportunity to learn together in real or own time, regardless of geographic location. It provides access to presentations from around the world from everyone including our professional gurus right down to early career practitioners using cutting-edge strategies and resources. It’s a professional learning opportunity that is not to be missed by anyone working in this field!
Teri: Virtual events have their challenges, but they have huge advantages as well. The flexibility of not having to travel in order to present makes it possible to draw from a much larger pool of presenters worldwide and offer their presentations in several languages with minimal barriers. I believe offering that breadth of perspectives with the option of accessing presentations on demand delivers an event that is unmatched in quality and availability.
What new elements or ideas do you hope to incorporate to the program this year?
Trudy: I would like to find ways to make the presentations more interactive—how can we talk to each other in more meaningful ways than the simple hellos we conduct in the chat or one-word answers we provide when asked? How can we provide opportunities to have deep discussions and make meaningful connections with the content? How can we create meaningful engagements across the digital divide? I am hoping to create an interactive, engaging shared learning experience with my fellow co-chairs so that we all learn together.
Teri: Last year we tried out a couple of new styles of presentations, seeking ways to provide real growth experiences for both the attendees and the presenters. This year we are adding a new approach to specifying instructional levels to help presenters clearly target their audiences, and help the participants choose between the many excellent options those that will best meet their needs. We are also working to recruit even more international presentations.
Lilian: I would like the program to motivate and excite more professionals and students from Latin America to participate and present research and papers, which are carried out both in Spanish and in Portuguese and are truly of a high level.
What advice do you have for someone considering submitting* a proposal for a session? Why is it important to present at conferences like this one?
Trudy: While presenting at a conference looks great on your resume and is to be encouraged, what it also does is put you in the spotlight for other professionals who will follow up with questions and creates ongoing discussion. Conference presentations build your professional networks and extend your knowledge and practice. If you are considering submitting a proposal then it means you have a fabulous technique, strategy, or resource to share. You may have conducted a research project with intriguing results, or you may be working with a team doing innovative work. We want to learn from you!
Lilian: There are times when good work is done on a day-to-day basis and we do not realize that we have material that can be highly valued simply because the idea of sharing it and presenting it has not been raised. I think there are a lot of professionals who do impeccable work, routinely and constantly evaluate it, and have results that they should share so that we can all learn from each other. It seems to me that it is a matter of changing attitudes and trying to share our work to improve our professional practice.
Teri: Every professional has a distinctive perspective – experiences that are unique to the place and constituency with whom they work. Presenting provides an opportunity to share that perspective so that other professionals can benefit from your skills. And presenting is a unique opportunity to grow as a professional in both scope and depth of practice.

¿Por qué aceptó participar como copresidenta del panel asesor de educación de este año?
Trudy Smith: Ya fui miembro del panel asesor de educación en el Simposio de 2021, por lo que tuve una visión privilegiada del proceso y ¡he tenido el honor de ser propuesta como copresidenta también este año! Espero representar las perspectivas, las actitudes y los conocimientos de la región sur global en este comité.
Lilian Flores-Beltrán: Creo que cualquier profesional que trabaje en el ámbito de la escucha y el lenguaje hablado aceptaría ser copresidente del panel asesor del Simposio de 2023. Es un reto y un honor colaborar y aportar la visión propia en un proyecto tan internacional e importante.
Teri Ouellette: La experiencia de participar en el panel de 2022 me pareció emocionante y personalmente enriquecedora. Trabajar con colegas de todo el mundo me aportó nuevas perspectivas. He tenido el honor de que me invitaran a desempeñar el papel de «copresidenta previa» para contribuir con mi experiencia del año pasado al panel de 2023.
¿Qué experiencia y conocimientos aporta en el proceso de planificación?
Teri: Como «copresidenta previa», espero aportar la experiencia de todo aquello que se ha considerado útil. Como miembro de AG Bell desde la década de 1980 y expresidenta de la Junta de la Academia, mi historial como participante es amplio, pero espero con interés conocer las propuestas de los nuevos miembros del panel y estoy segura de que combinaremos nuestras perspectivas para presentar otro Simposio extraordinario.
Trudy: Hace más de 10 años que gestiono acciones de aprendizaje profesional y asisto a eventos organizados por AG Bell desde hace 15 años. También hace 10 años que soy mentora de LSLS e imparto clases en el máster universitario de Profesor de sordos de NextSense/Macquarie University. Estoy deseando aportar mis conocimientos profesionales y las redes de colegas (¡que también son amigos personales!) en el proceso de planificación de 2023.
Lilian: En los últimos 22 años he creado muchos cursos para profesionales en casi todos los países latinoamericanos, tanto en español como en portugués, además de comprender las diferentes formas de pensar de cada cultura. Latinoamérica no es solo una gran región, sino que está compuesta de numerosos países con una gran herencia cultural individual. Hay quien cree que, porque millones de personas hablen el mismo idioma, son todas iguales, lo que no podría estar más lejos de la realidad. Cada país tiene sus características propias y aplicaré estos conocimientos para ayudar a incrementar el número de asistentes procedentes de Latinoamérica en el Simposio.
Este será el tercer año que el Simposio se celebre como evento virtual. ¿Por qué cree que la gente sigue asistiendo a este evento todos los años?
Lilian: Es evidente que este cambio se lo debemos a la pandemia y considero que, sin haberlo imaginado, la oferta de un Simposio virtual ha resultado extremadamente positiva. Hemos tenido la oportunidad de incrementar la asistencia de profesionales y estudiantes procedentes de numerosas partes del mundo, facilitándoles la posibilidad de participar en un evento que no habría sido posible de otra manera.
Trudy: El Simposio ofrece la oportunidad de aprender conjuntamente en tiempo real o a su propio ritmo, independientemente de la ubicación geográfica. Proporciona el acceso a presentaciones procedentes de profesionales de todo el mundo; desde nuestros «gurús» tradicionales a profesionales noveles que utilizan estrategias y recursos de vanguardia. ¡Es una oportunidad de aprendizaje profesional que nadie que trabaje en este ámbito se debe perder!
Teri: Los eventos virtuales presentan sus propios retos pero también ofrecen enormes ventajas. La flexibilidad de no tener que desplazarse para realizar una presentación hace posible que un mayor número de ponentes de todo el mundo esté disponible y ofrezca sus presentaciones en varios idiomas con unas barreras mínimas. Creo que la oferta de esta amplitud de perspectivas con la opción de acceder a las presentaciones bajo demanda hace que este evento sea inigualable en términos de calidad y disponibilidad.
¿Qué nuevos elementos o ideas espera incorporar al programa de este año?
Trudy: Me gustaría conseguir que las presentaciones fueran más interactivas: ¿cómo podemos interactuar de una manera que sea más significativa, más allá del simple saludo en el chat o la respuesta de una sola palabra que facilitamos cuando se nos pregunta? ¿Cómo podemos ofrecer oportunidades para mantener debates en profundidad y establecer conexiones significativas con el contenido? ¿Cómo podemos generar una participación significativa a través de la brecha digital? Espero crear una experiencia de aprendizaje interactiva, compartida y atractiva con mis colegas copresidentas para que todos aprendamos conjuntamente.
Teri: El año pasado probamos un par de nuevos estilos de presentación, buscando formas de ofrecer experiencias de crecimiento real tanto para los asistentes como para los ponentes. Este año añadiremos un nuevo enfoque para especificar los niveles de enseñanza y ayudar a los ponentes a dirigirse claramente a su público, además de ayudar a los participantes a elegir, entre las numerosas y excelentes opciones, aquellas que mejor satisfagan sus necesidades. También estamos trabajando para conseguir un mayor número de presentaciones internacionales.
Lilian: Me gustaría que el programa motive y anime a más profesionales y estudiantes de Latinoamérica a participar y a presentar sus investigaciones y trabajos que se realizan tanto en español como en portugués y que tienen verdaderamente un gran nivel.
¿Qué consejo le daría a alguien que esté considerando presentar* una propuesta para una sesión? ¿Por qué es importante realizar una presentación en conferencias de este tipo?
Trudy: Si bien la presentación en una conferencia es un elemento importante para incluir en el currículum y se debe alentar, lo que también hace es situar al ponente en el centro de atención, de manera que otros profesionales realizarán un seguimiento con preguntas y generarán un debate. Las presentaciones en congresos sirven para crear redes profesionales y ampliar los conocimientos y prácticas. Si está considerando el envío de una propuesta será porque dispone de una técnica, una estrategia o un recurso fantástico que desea compartir. Es posible que haya realizado un proyecto de investigación con resultados interesantes o que trabaje con un equipo que realice un trabajo innovador. ¡Estamos deseando conocer su aportación!
Lilian: Hay ocasiones en que hacemos un buen trabajo diario y no nos damos cuenta de que disponemos de un material que puede ser muy valorado simplemente porque no nos hemos planteado la idea de compartirlo y presentarlo. Creo que hay muchos profesionales que realizan un trabajo impecable, evaluándolo de una manera rutinaria y constante, y tienen resultados que deberían compartir para que todos podamos aprender unos de otros. Me parece que se trata de un cambio de actitud y de compartir nuestro trabajo para mejorar nuestra práctica profesional.
Teri: Cada profesional tiene una perspectiva distintiva, es decir, unas experiencias que son singulares en función del lugar y del grupo con el que trabajen. La presentación ofrece la oportunidad de compartir esta perspectiva para que otros profesionales se puedan beneficiar de sus experiencias. Por otra parte, una presentación es una oportunidad única para crecer como profesional tanto en el alcance como en la profundidad de la práctica.
