Throughout the year, AG Bell hosts a number of college-aged interns who become familiar with how nonprofits work, and how AG Bell specifically works. They help out in a number of departments and functions, and meet our members. During the summer, they also assist with our LOFT program attendees, many who are not much younger in age than they are. The interns always have memorable experiences which they share with Volta Voices after they leave. Here are some of their stories.

During my internship at the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, one of the most surprising things I encountered was the diverse community of individuals with hearing loss. It was truly eye-opening to work with AG Bell and learn about the challenges and triumphs faced by people who are deaf or hard of hearing, especially those who utilize listening and spoken language approaches around the world.
Throughout my time at AG Bell, I learned more about technologies and gained a deeper understanding of the latest advancements in this field. Witnessing the positive impact of these technologies on the lives of individuals with hearing loss was both inspiring and humbling. One aspect that stood out was the importance of early intervention and education for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Seeing the dedication of educators and professionals in this field made me realize the transformative effects of providing support and resources at an early age.
I had the opportunity to work on various projects that involved using Excel and other software tools. One of the primary tasks I was involved in was managing and organizing AG Bell’s membership data using Excel spreadsheets. I implemented data cleaning techniques to ensure accuracy and consistency. I also evaluated various software tools that could enhance collaboration and engagement among members.
My internship at AG Bell provided me with an excellent opportunity to combine my technical abilities with a greater understanding of the community of people who are deaf and hard of hearing. It was a fulfilling experience to witness how technology and community-driven initiatives can create positive change and improve the lives of those in need. Being part of this community has given me a newfound appreciation for the unique perspectives and experiences of individuals with hearing loss. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to their mission and to have been a part of such a meaningful and impactful organization.

A lo largo del año, AG Bell acoge a varios becarios universitarios que se familiarizan con el funcionamiento de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y, en concreto, con el de AG Bell. Colaboran en diversos departamentos y funciones, y conocen a nuestros afiliados. Los becarios siempre viven experiencias memorables que comparten con Voces de Volta cuando finalizan las prácticas.

Durante mis prácticas en la Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, una de las cosas más sorprendentes que me encontré fue la diversidad de la comunidad de personas con pérdida auditiva. Fue realmente aleccionador trabajar con AG Bell y conocer los retos y los triunfos de las personas con sordera o hipoacusia, especialmente las que utilizan métodos de escucha y lenguaje hablado en todo el mundo.
Durante el tiempo que pasé en AG Bell, aprendí más sobre tecnologías y adquirí un conocimiento más profundo de los últimos avances en este campo. Una de las principales tareas en las que participé fue la gestión y la organización de los datos de afiliación de AG Bell mediante hojas de cálculo Excel. Pude implementar técnicas de limpieza de datos para garantizar la precisión y la coherencia. También evalué varias herramientas informáticas que podrían mejorar la colaboración y el compromiso entre los miembros.
Las prácticas en AG Bell me han facilitado una excelente oportunidad de combinar mis capacidades técnicas con una mayor comprensión de la comunidad de personas con sordera e hipoacusia. Ha sido una experiencia gratificante ser testigo de cómo la tecnología y las iniciativas impulsadas por la comunidad pueden crear un cambio positivo y mejorar la vida de las personas que lo necesitan. Formar parte de esta comunidad me ha facilitado una nueva apreciación de las perspectivas y las experiencias únicas de las personas con pérdida auditiva. Agradezco la oportunidad de haber contribuido a su misión y de haber formado parte de una organización tan significativa e influyente.
