Throughout the year, AG Bell hosts a number of college-aged interns who become familiar with how nonprofits work, and how AG Bell specifically works. They help out in a number of departments and functions, and meet our members. During the summer, they also assist with our LOFT program attendees, many who are not much younger in age than they are. The interns always have memorable experiences which they share with Volta Voices after they leave. Here are some of their stories.

One of the most meaningful aspects of working with a nonprofit like AG Bell is the diverse areas we can gain experiences in!
As a programming intern, I was fortunate to work on hosting leadership opportunities for our youth. Witnessing how non-profits create positive change on a budget, and being a part of decision-making processes are highlights of my experience.
One of my responsibilities this summer involved roommate matching, where I looked at everyone’s applications and videos of them telling us ‘why they want to be a part of LOFT’. The feeling of seeing all the kids, their ideas, and who they are on paper and excel sheets come to life during the camp was transcendental.
As I sat with the kids during LOFT, with probably one other person in the room who didn’t need hearing aids, I was fondly surprised to see how easily the kids were able to communicate with each other in lowered/hushed voices (as compared to when we were conversing with them). This reinforced how shared challenges instill a sense of belonging and gave me a renewed perspective about overcoming hardships and the power we have in reinventing our shared reality.

A lo largo del año, AG Bell acoge a varios becarios universitarios que se familiarizan con el funcionamiento de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y, en concreto, con el de AG Bell. Colaboran en diversos departamentos y funciones, y conocen a nuestros afiliados. Durante el verano, también prestan ayuda a los asistentes a nuestro programa LOFT, dándose la circunstancia de que un gran número no son mucho más jóvenes que ellos. Los becarios siempre viven experiencias memorables que comparten con Voces de Volta cuando finalizan las prácticas.

Uno de los aspectos más significativos de trabajar con una organización sin ánimo de lucro como AG Bell es la diversidad de áreas en las que podemos adquirir experiencia.
Como becaria de programas, tuve la suerte de trabajar en la organización de oportunidades de liderazgo para nuestros jóvenes. Ser testigo de cómo las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro generan cambios positivos con un presupuesto limitado y participar en los procesos de toma de decisiones son aspectos destacados de mi experiencia.
Una de mis responsabilidades este verano consistía en emparejar a compañeros de habitación, para lo que tenía que acceder a las solicitudes y a los vídeos en los que los candidatos contaban «por qué querían formar parte de LOFT». La sensación de ver cómo todos los jóvenes, sus ideas y quiénes eran sobre el papel y las hojas de Excel cobraban vida durante el campamento fue extraordinaria.
Cuando me reunía con ellos durante el programa LOFT, y con probablemente otra persona en la sala que no necesitaba audífonos, me sorprendía gratamente ver la facilidad con la que los jóvenes eran capaces de comunicarse entre sí en voz baja/susurrando (en comparación a cuando conversábamos con ellos). De esta forma pude reforzar la idea de que los retos compartidos infunden un sentimiento de pertenencia y adquirí una perspectiva renovada sobre la superación de las dificultades y el poder que tenemos para reinventar la realidad que compartimos.
