As a teacher, Ann Lovett did more than just teach the students in front of her. She helped teach their families, too. Focusing on children with hearing loss in the York region of Ontario, Canada, Ann spent 44 years teaching these children how to communicate using listening and spoken language and supporting their families through the process.
She is remembered for her wit and passion, and her enormous commitment to the families who passed through her classroom.
“Ms. Ann Lovett was my itinerant teacher of the deaf in grades 7 and 8. She knew I was being bullied and so she rushed to get to my school (two to three times a week) before lunch hour so we could eat our lunch together. I loved every second with her. Her gentle, quiet, shy, bashful, loving, and extraordinarily polite nature touched my very soul,” wrote her teacher-turned-colleague and friend, Karen MacIver-Lux, M.A., Aud(C), Reg. CASLPO, LSLS Cert. AVT, president of SoundIntuition and director of MacIver-Lux Auditory Learning Services in Ontario. “She was calm, loving, selfless…and beyond wise to the very end. She was my mentor in kindness and shared my enthusiasm for learning…no matter where it took us. And it was not uncommon for me to bump into her at a conference on the other side of the world.”
Karen mentioned how Ann “hardly missed an AG Bell conference,” regardless where it was in the world.
A donation to the York Region District School Board will be appreciated, in lieu of flowers. A trust in Ann’s name is being created to provide continued support for children with hearing loss. Checks may be payable to York Region District School Board- TRUST.

En recuerdo de Ann Lovett
Como maestra, Ann Lovett hizo algo más que enseñar a sus alumnos y alumnas; también ayudó a enseñar a sus familias. Durante 44 años, Ann se dedicó a trabajar con niños con pérdida auditiva de la región de York en Ontario, Canadá, con el fin de que aprendieran a comunicarse a través de la escucha y el lenguaje hablado, además de apoyar a sus familias durante el proceso.
Siempre se la recordará por su ingenio, su entusiasmo y su enorme compromiso con las familias que pasaban por su aula.
«La señora Ann Lovett fue mi maestra de audición/lenguaje itinerante en los cursos 7º y 8º. Era consciente de que sufría acoso escolar y se apresuraba a llegar a la escuela (dos o tres veces por semana) antes de la hora del almuerzo para que pudiéramos almorzar juntas. Me encantaba pasar tiempo con ella. Su forma de ser serena, tranquila, tímida, amistosa y extraordinariamente educada me llegaba al alma», escribió su amiga y posteriormente maestra Karen MacIver-Lux, M.A., Aud(C), Reg. CASLPO, LSLS Cert. AVT, presidenta de SoundIntuition y directora de Maciver-Lux Auditory Learning Services en Ontario. «Era una persona tranquila, cariñosa, desinteresada… y muy sabia hasta el final. Me enseñó a ser amable y compartió mi entusiasmo por aprender… sin importar hacia dónde nos llevara. Y no me resultaba raro encontrarme con ella en un congreso al otro lado del mundo».
Karen menciona que Ann «procuraba no perderse ningún congreso de AG Bell», independientemente del lugar donde se encontrase.
En lugar de flores, se agradecería una donación a la Junta Escolar del Distrito de la región de York. Se está creando un fondo a nombre de Ann para ofrecer un respaldo continuo a los niños con pérdida auditiva. Los cheques se deben extender a nombre de «York Region District School Board- TRUST».
