The 2021 AG Bell Global Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Virtual Symposium will focus on thriving in a changing world. Over the past year, we have all learned how to adapt and engage meaningfully in a digital environment. This year’s Virtual Symposium will take place June 24 and 25, be fully online, and integrate English and Spanish with oral translation and written captions. These features give AG Bell the ability to reach out even more professionals looking to learn best practices around listening and spoken language (LSL) regardless of where they live.
“I am thrilled we can bring back our virtual symposium at a time when people around the world are eager to learn more about listening and spoken language outcomes,” said Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell). “Last year we were able to reach over 1,000 people from 44 countries, and this year I expect us to reach even more individuals at a global level to expand our collective knowledge of LSL best practices.”
A main goal of the Symposium is to give attendees a diverse perspective on how listening and spoken language is being developed and pursued internationally. This year’s program features many experienced presenters from around the world providing learning opportunities that are rich in content.
Same Great Learning Opportunities
Participants in the Virtual Symposium can expect world-class learning opportunities from leaders in the field of LSL. In addition to four exceptional keynote presenters, this year’s program adds a fifth keynote presentation. The bonus keynote experience features a panel of leaders representing research, technology, gene therapies, and family connections who will discuss what the future of hearing loss will look like.
“We are excited to offer a full, deep, and enriching program with presenters who inspire and lead with their passion for helping children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to listen and talk,” said Gayla Guignard, AG Bell’s Chief Strategy Officer. “The Symposium core committee has worked hard to identify up-to-date and engaging content so our attendees will walk away with a whole arsenal of new ideas and tools to use in their own practice.”
The Virtual Symposium will also offer concurrent sessions, two hearing innovation forums, and poster + 5-minute podium presentations. Similar to previous years, three simultaneous concurrent sessions per one- to 1.5-hour time slot will be offered throughout the two days of programming.
Another feature back this year is the On-Demand Symposium event. Most of the live sessions will be recorded, so attendees will be able to attend one session live and access any other session scheduled for the same time once on-demand sessions become available). This access is included in the registration fee.
Online Format
As professionals have transitioned to working in a remote setting, it’s important to choose an online format that will aid in recreating, as much as possible, the great learning opportunities found with personal interaction. Professionals are not alone in their endeavors to provide online education, intervention, or therapy. Together, the Virtual Symposium is designed to provide valuable lectures and interactive sessions geared to further development of vital knowledge and skills.
Participate Live or On-Demand
What makes the Virtual Symposium a great deal is that those who register as a professional will have access to most of the Symposium sessions in a recorded format during a six-week period later in the summer. Participants may choose to join the live Symposium on June 24 and 25 and interact with colleagues, or view later when time allows. Whether participants want to attend the live Symposium, the on-demand Symposium sessions, or a combination of both, one registration is all that is needed. Continuing education credit is available for both the live Symposium and on-demand content.
Participants can hear from and participate with colleagues on their own schedule. They can join the live Symposium sessions, view recorded sessions, or do a mix of live and recorded sessions to earn CEUs and be with others who are interested in LSL. Choosing a mix of live and recorded sessions will be easy through an online learning platform, and all sessions will be available in English and Spanish. El Simposio Global Virtual de AG Bell de Escucha y Lenguaje Hablado (LSL) 2021 se centrará en prosperar en un mundo cambiante. El Simposio Virtual de este año tendrá lugar los días 24 y 25 de junio, será completamente en línea, e integrará el inglés y el español con traducción oral y subtítulos. Con estas características, AG Bell tiene la capacidad de llegar a más profesionales que deseen aprender las mejores prácticas en escucha y lenguaje hablado (LSL), independientemente de su lugar de residencia.

Excelentes oportunidades de aprendizaje
Los participantes en el Simposio Virtual pueden esperar oportunidades de aprendizaje de primer orden por parte de personas líderes en el ámbito de LSL. Además de cuatro excepcionales ponentes principales, en el programa de este año se añade una quinta presentación principal. Este evento adicional consistirá en un debate acerca del futuro de la pérdida auditiva por parte de un panel de líderes representantes de la investigación, la tecnología, las terapias genéticas y las conexiones familiares.
«Nos complace ofrecer un programa completo, profundo y enriquecedor con ponentes que inspiran y lideran con su entusiasmo por ayudar a los niños con sordera e hipoacusia a aprender a escuchar y hablar», afirmó Gayla Guignard, directora de Estrategia de AG Bell. «El comité central del Simposio ha realizado un gran trabajo para identificar contenido actualizado y atractivo con el fin de que nuestros asistentes adquieran un arsenal de nuevas ideas y herramientas que puedan utilizar en su propia práctica».
El Simposio Virtual ofrecerá también sesiones simultáneas, dos foros de innovación auditiva y presentaciones de póster + podio de 5 minutos. Al igual que en años anteriores, se ofrecerán tres sesiones simultáneas por franja horaria de 1-1,5 horas durante los dos días de programación.
Otra característica de este año es el evento de Simposio bajo demanda. La mayoría de las sesiones en vivo (en directo) se grabará, por lo que los asistentes podrán asistir a una sesión en vivo y acceder a cualquier otra sesión programada en el mismo horario una vez que las sesiones bajo demanda estén disponibles. Este acceso está incluido en la cuota de inscripción.
Formato en línea
Dado que los profesionales han pasado a trabajar en un entorno remoto, es importante elegir un formato en línea que ayude a recrear, en la medida de lo posible, las excelentes oportunidades de aprendizaje que ofrece la interacción personal. Los profesionales no están solos en su esfuerzo de proporcionar formación, intervención o terapia en línea. Por esta razón, el Simposio Virtual está diseñado para ofrecer ponencias y sesiones interactivas de gran valor, orientadas a un mayor desarrollo de conocimientos y habilidades vitales.
Participe en vivo o bajo demanda
Uno de los principales beneficios del Simposio Virtual se basa en que las personas que se inscriban como profesionales tendrán acceso a la mayoría de las sesiones del Simposio en un formato grabado durante un periodo de seis semanas en verano. Los participantes podrán optar por asistir al Simposio en vivo los días 24 y 25 de junio e interactuar con sus colegas, o acceder más tarde a su conveniencia. Tanto si los participantes desean asistir al Simposio en vivo, acceder a las sesiones del Simposio bajo demanda, o a una combinación de ambos, todo lo que necesitan es inscribirse. Los créditos de educación continua (CEU) están disponibles tanto para el Simposio en vivo como para el contenido bajo demanda.
Los participantes podrán escuchar a sus colegas y participar en su propio horario. Podrán asistir a las sesiones del Simposio en vivo, visualizar las sesiones grabadas u optar por una combinación de sesiones en vivo y grabadas para obtener CEU e interactuar con otras personas interesadas en LSL.
