Having a certification for LSL in Spanish will raise the bar in terms of the services and choices given in different Spanish-speaking countries.
The AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language is pleased to announce that the LSLS certification exam is now available in both English and Spanish. “We are thrilled to achieve this milestone with the AG Bell Academy. Providing certification in two languages will greatly increase the support available to families all over the world who want their child to learn to listen and talk,” said Gayla Guignard, AG Bell’s Chief Strategy Officer.
The Spanish version of the certification exam could not have come to fruition without the involvement of the community of LSLS-certified professionals in Central and South America, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. Additionally, work that was conducted through AG Bell International in Madrid to translate materials, forms, and the Academy website has been key to bringing us to this point.
“Most people don’t realize that there are over 560,000 million people who speak and use Spanish around the globe. Because of the labor of love of the Spanish-speaking community, families from all over the world will now have access to Listening and Spoken Language and improved outcomes for their child with hearing loss. Having this exam and the certification process available in Spanish is opening a floodgate. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next ten years!” shared AG Bell CEO Emilio Alonso-Mendoza.
Plans to translate the certification exam and certification support material into Spanish began to take shape several years ago. The Academy board acknowledged that while there is a difference between learning English and Spanish as a spoken language, the principles for listening and spoken language (LSL) development are the same. “Offering the LSLS Certification Exam in Spanish will allow many more professionals in the U.S. and around the world to have access to LSL information,” stated Carol Flexer, who, along with Don Goldberg, helped oversee the development of the Spanish version of the exam. An overview of the content in the exam is provided via the LSLS Certification Exam Blueprint (in English and in Spanish).
“Spanish is one of the five most spoken languages in the world. Having a certification for LSL in Spanish will raise the bar in terms of the services and choices given in different Spanish-speaking countries,” said Fernanda Hinojosa, director of the Aurea Lab in Mexico. “Families will have access to more qualified services that will have a huge impact on their children’s LSL skills. Once these children are developing LSL, other families will start to ask for these services so more professionals will want to get certified.”
Last year, the AG Bell Academy offered a beta version to test the translation and adjustments the working committee made to create a Spanish version of the high-stakes exam. As a result, 50 professionals from around the world became a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist for Spanish-speaking families. “The fact that professionals in our area know that they have access to this exam in Spanish will motivate them to prepare and meet the requirements requested by the AG Bell Academy to become certified,” said Lilian Flores, who was certified in 2003 and has worked with professionals throughout Ibero-America. “By putting emphasis on the parent relationship, not surprisingly the professionals who seek certification will also end up having better relationships with audiologists, school teachers, and, of course, the parents and families of the children they work with.”
How to Become a Certified LSL Specialist
The process to begin the certification process is the same whether you are seeking to take the exam in English or Spanish. First, you must create a profile in the LSL Registry. From there, the steps to certification will take 3-to-5 years. The Spanish exam includes 194 total questions, with 175 counting towards the exam results and 19 being used for ongoing beta testing. La versión en español del examen de certificación no podría haberse hecho realidad sin la implicación de la comunidad de profesionales certificados en LSLS de América Central y del Sur, de México, de España y de los Estados Unidos. Además, el trabajo realizado a través de AG Bell International (Madrid) en la traducción de los materiales, los formularios y el sitio web de la Academia ha sido clave para llegar hasta aquí.
«La mayoría de la gente no es consciente de que hay más de 560 millones de personas que hablan y utilizan el español alrededor del mundo. Gracias a la generosa labor de la comunidad hispanohablante, habrá familias de todo el mundo que tendrán acceso a la Escucha y el Lenguaje Hablado y, a mejores resultados para sus hijos con pérdida auditiva. Disponer de este examen y de un proceso de certificación en español significa abrir una gran puerta. Estoy impaciente por conocer lo que ocurrirá en los próximos diez años», expone Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO de AG Bell.
Los planes para traducir al español el examen de certificación y el material de apoyo para la certificación empezaron a tomar forma hace varios años. La junta directiva de la Academia reconoció que, aunque existen diferencias entre aprender inglés y aprender español como lenguaje hablado, los principios de la Escucha y el Lenguaje Hablado (LSL) son los mismos. «Ofrecer el examen de certificación LSLS en español permitirá que muchos más profesionales de los EE. UU. y de todo el mundo tengan acceso a la información sobre LSL», explica Carol Flexer, quien, junto con Don Goldberg, ayudó a supervisar el desarrollo de la versión en español del examen. Se encuentra disponible una descripción general del contenido del examen a través del Modelo del Examen de Certificación de LSLS (en inglés y en español).
«El español es uno de los cinco idiomas más hablados del mundo. Contar con una certificación de LSL en español elevará el listón en cuanto a los servicios y las opciones que se ofrecen en los distintos países hispanohablantes», opina Fernanda Hinojosa, directora del Aurea Lab de México. «Las familias tendrán acceso a servicios más cualificados que impactarán enormemente en las competencias LSL de sus hijos. Una vez que estos niños utilicen el enfoque LSL, otras familias empezarán a solicitar estos servicios, por lo que más profesionales desearán obtener la certificación».
El año pasado, la AG Bell Academy ofreció una versión beta para poner a prueba la traducción y los ajustes que el comité de trabajo había realizado para crear un examen en español que se encontrara a la altura. Como resultado, 50 profesionales de todo el mundo obtuvieron la certificación de Especialista en Escucha y Lenguaje Hablado para familias hispanohablantes. «El hecho de que los profesionales de nuestro sector sepan que tienen acceso al examen en español les motivará a prepararse y a cumplir con los requisitos solicitados por la AG Bell Academy para certificarse», explica Lilian Flores, quien se certificó en 2003 y ha colaborado con profesionales en toda Iberoamérica. «Al enfatizar la relación con los padres, no es de extrañar, que los profesionales que buscan la certificación acaben teniendo mejores relaciones con los audiólogos, los maestros escolares y, por supuesto, con los padres y las familias de los niños con los que trabajan».
¿Cómo convertirse en Especialista Certificado en LSL?
El procedimiento para iniciar el proceso de certificación es el mismo si es que deseas realizar el examen en inglés o en español. Primero debes de crear un perfil en el Registro de LSL. A partir de ese momento, los pasos para obtener la certificación tomarán entre 3 y 5 años.
